Exploring Sri Lankas Wildlife With a “Go on a Couch” Safari Virtual Tour
Sri Lanka attracts a significant amount of foreign visitors every year to experience the wildlife living in our National Parks. Ranked at top 5 among biodiversity hotspots in the world, Sri Lanka is also known for having the highest rate of biodiversity endemism, making it a favoured destination amongst naturalists, wildlife enthusiasts, environmentalists and curious travellers.
While currently, we are having to socially distance ourselves globally, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) are looking at innovative ways to keep international travellers interested in potentially visiting Sri Lanka when the conditions are right and safe again. The initiative of streaming wild safari drives showcased in the countries beautiful National parks will let viewers around the world experience wildlife from the comfort of their home. Kimarli Fernando, Chairperson, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau stated that this initiative was taken to keep Sri Lanka engaging for travellers and to avoid the out of sight out of mind syndrome in world travel. She further stated that she is very happy to be a part of this initiative taken by SLTPB as an avid wildlife enthusiast.
This initiative will give Sri Lanka the opportunity in showcasing the rich biodiversity it has to offer and remind visitors that the wildlife in Sri Lanka is still thriving amidst these challenging times. She further stated that this would allow foreign visitors across the globe to be able to experience Sri Lanka wildlife “On the Couch” from the comfort of their home despite been unable to visit Sri Lanka. “Go on a Couch Safari” will begin it’s online streaming series on the 4th of November until the 13th of November 2020, this attempt is not taken only to promote Sri Lanka tourism amongst international travellers, but most importantly expected to bring attention towards the rich biodiversity Sri Lanka has to offer and the importance of preserving it.
