Foreign Visitor Arrivals Decline by 50% for First Half of 2020
Sri Lanka has recorded a drastic decline of 50% in foreign visitor arrivals for the first half of 2020 due to the effects of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The number of foreign visitors to the country in the first half of 2020 was 507,311 in comparison to 1.08 million for the same period in 2019. In its efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic the government terminated the arrival of all passenger flights and ships to Sri Lanka from 18th March resulting zero foreign visitor arrival in the months of April, May and June. India, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, and China were Sri Lanka’s top five international tourist generating markets in the period from January to June this year.
