Let's get right to it!

Traveling is a leisure activity enjoyed by most people. And travel agencies have made it possible since 1758. That means Tourism has been around for a really long time!

In Tourism there are 5 major components we also call these as 5A's

  1. Attraction
  2. Accessibility
  3. Accommodation
  4. Amenities
  5. Activities

These 5 A's help tourists judge a destination and make travel decisions because these components cater to their comforts, interests and purposes of travel.

Apart from the 5 A's there are 5 main characteristics in tourism

  1. Intangibility
  2. Perishability
  3. Seasonality
  4. Interdependence
  5. Heterogeneity

Tourism has a direct impact on a country's social, economic and environmental factors.

Just like other businesses, there are negative and positive impacts which are kept in check by the Sri Lankan Tourism Guiding Principles;

  • Capture benefits
  • Democratization of economic participation
  • Conserve and manage assets on a world-class level
  • Involve local communities
  • Heritage related experiences
  • Responsible destination marketing
  • Safety and security

Now we know that not all tourists have the same reasons for travel. We need to get to know them so that we can target and attract them to our business.

According to the United Nation , tourism has been categories into three

  1. Domestic - Residents traveling within a country
  2. Inbound - Non-residents traveling within a country
  3. Outbound - Residents from one country traveling internationally
